Internet Safety Blog Posting
The Internet Safety Blog artifact was completed to help me model and facilitate safe and ethical uses of digital information and resources in the classroom. During this assignment, I reviewed three websites on the safe and healthy use of the internet that would be beneficial when learning about student’s safety on the internet. Two of the sites are for teachers, and one website provides a video for students to learn about Internet Safety.
Through the development of the Internet Safety Blog, I reviewed three websites over the safety and healthy use of the internet that would be beneficial when learning about student’s safety on the internet. In addition to Internet Safety, I also reflected on Global Collaboration Projects (GCPs). Global Collaborative Projects (GCPs) can be used to help students develop digital citizenship, global and cultural awareness, and collaboration skills by focusing on a specific skill for mastery while collaborating with others to promote learning. After learning about GCPs and its benefits to students, I suggested two websites that I would use with my students to help students develop digital citizenship and collaboration skills, which are Edmodo and Global Math Project.
While completing the blog artifact, I visited the website Common Sense Education Digital Citizenship. After visiting the site, I learned about and thought the three following strategies discussed by Common Sense Education are critical for educators to follow when using the internet for students learning and data. Firstly, Common Sense Education encourages teachers to look for the "s" in the URL whenever utilizing a website and when students are logging into the site. The "s" means that the website is encrypted and a lot more secure. If there is no "s" within the URL of a website, it is wise to re-assess the site. Secondly, check out the site's privacy policy, if there is not a privacy policy for the site, do not use the site. Thirdly, use websites that are geared toward educational purposes. If you are unsure about a website, check your school/district approve list. Also, speak with a technology specialist at your school/district, and even complete a privacy evaluation online at Common Sense website.
Most importantly, I learned that Internet safety is essential in keeping the confidentiality of students and their data safe. Additionally, I learned that the Common Sense site has valuable information for both students and teachers on the importance of internet safety. Within the site, digital citizenship is covered to help students gain an insight into the importance of internet safety and how to become an upstanding citizen when using the internet. In closing, I believe that it is essential to follow the three strategies I addressed above to ensure I demonstrate safe, healthy, legal, and ethical uses of digital information and technologies in the classroom for teaching and learning.
Although this blog cannot be assessed, it has had a significant impact on my professional practice. I have learned so much about digital citizenship and internet safety, which has had a positive effect on my student's learning in the classroom. I have made sure to implement research-based practices and digital resources that promote safe and ethical uses with students and teachers.
